Acoustic monitoring of the Eastern ground parrot in the heathlands of the Sunshine Coast

Coolum and North Shore Coast Care has been actively monitoring the threatened Eastern ground parrot across the Sunshine Coast heathlands. Passive acoustic monitoring devices deployed within coastal wallum heath habitats record the species’ distinctive dawn and dusk calls, providing a non-invasive and repeatable method for detecting this cryptic and rarely observed bird. Acoustic monitoring enables volunteers and researchers to assess the presence, distribution, and seasonal activity of Eastern ground parrots. The project contributes valuable long-term data to local conservation efforts and supports the management of important ground parrot habitat in the Sunshine Coast region.
